The Disappearance of Mexican Folk Art

The quality of the Mexican products is having a hard time fighting the dumped Chinese products and their subsidized prices.

First of all, the world has seen a huge metamorphosis during the mid-twentieth century with the advance of globalization; the most impressive part of this is, is that it has been a massive change not only in recent history but in the history of mankind. This new wave has set a new standard across markets and economies; supply and demand of products and services has had a total renovation. It is now possible to buy products from the remotest places on earth.  On the other hand, the liberalization of trade and the economy is causing the slow replacement of quality and neatly-designed Mexican Handcrafts by lower quality and price Chinese products, brought all the way from The Great Wall land.

Moreover, if we analyze several reports we can reach the conclusion that foreigners are not able to recognize an original piece of Mexican Art, thinking that Chinese products are much better due the price. This disfavors the Mexican crafters and artists, whose products have way more quality, imagination and colors. Likewise, if we analyze the trade imbalance with other countries we can easily figure out that this is affecting local trade, national folklore and our identity itself.

Furthermore, the great value of the Mexican Culture, which is praised and appreciated worldwide, has the following principles; rejection of child exploitation, equality between Men and Women, hard work, environmental consciousness, quality and sustainability. These characteristics give the Mexican crafter, artist and designer a very special aura of singularity.

In conclusion, globalization could be a positive force for everyone if it is used to support our traditions, economy and way of life.  Were we not to give the Mexican crafts an special place, they could be a generation away from extinction, disappearing not only an art but our backbone as society, our culture.
